How to Access IXL From a Home Device: (Access Will Be Available Until July 31st) 

1. Go to Clever 
2. See the directions for logging into Clever 
3. Choose the IXL App 

Directions when in IXL: 

1. Students will Click on the Assessment Page in IXL. 
2. The Math and ELA Categories are identified by Stars and scores. Every 100 is a grade level. For example: if you have a 430 you are performing on the 4th grade level around the 3rd month of that school year. 
3. We encourage students to work on the categories that are low for them by clicking on the stars and choosing recommended skills. 
4. As they complete the work for each category they will be given a smart score. They want to achieve at least a 70-80 smart score for each assigned skill before moving on to the next recommended skill. 
5. A student’s starred scores will rise or fall based on their performance. 

• What do you think the book is going to be about? 
• What kind of characters do you think will be in the book? 
• What do you think is going to happen? 
• If you were that character, what would you have done differently in that situation? 
• What does the place look like in your head as you read? Would you want to visit there? 
• Did you learn any new words or facts so far? 
• What was your favorite part of the book? Why? 
• Who was your favorite character? Why? 
• What was the most interesting thing you learned from the book? 
• Did the problem of the book’s plot get solved? 
• If you could change one thing in the book, what would it be? 

Exposition (Beginning)

Characters:

• Who is the character? Who are the characters?
• What are you learning about the character?
• What d you want to learn about the character?
• Who are the primary and secondary characters?

Setting:

• Where does the story take place? How do you know?

Perspective:

• What point of view is the story being told from? (1st person or third person?)
• Why might he author have chosen to tell the story from this perspective? Why is it important?

Structure:

• How is the story organized?
• How much time passes between each scene?

Rising Action

Characters:

• Describe the character. What in the story makes you think that?
• What does the character want?

Setting:

• Why is the setting important to what is happening in the story so far?

Problem:

• What are the potential conflict(s) in the story?

Climax

Character Deep Dive:

• Why did the character do, say, or think ____?
• How do the character's actions, words, thoughts support what the character wants?
• What does the character want?
• What is the character's struggle?
• How do the secondary character(s) impact the primary character?

Problem:

• What is the problem? Why is it important?
• Is there one big problem? Multiple small problems?
• Is the conflict(s) internal or external? How do you know?
• Why is this a problem for the character(s)?

Falling Action

Character Deep Dive:

• Why did the character do, say, or think ____?
• How do the character's actions, words, thoughts support what the character wants?
• What does the character want?
• What is the character's struggle?
• How do the secondary character(s) impact the primary character?

Problem:

• How might the problem be resolved? What makes you think that?
• How does the character(s) react to the problem?

Resolution (Ending)

Character Deep Dive:

• How did the character change?
• What did the character learn?

Resolution:

• Was the problem solved? How was the problem solved?
• Why might the author have chosen to solve the problem this way?

Theme:

• What is the story really about?
• What is the lesson readers can learn from this story?
